Excavate to a suitable depth, lay your sub-base of MOT Type 1 Recycled, compact it down with a hired plate compactor, and finish with gravel, paving slabs, or block pavers.

Driveways and Hardstanding Areas

For anything that requires vehicle weight, a driveway, hardstanding for a caravan, or an off-road parking area, the layering approach used by professional contractors works just as well at a domestic scale.

Start with 6F2/6F5 recycled aggregate to raise and level the ground where needed. It’s a 125mm down dust-capping material, one of the most cost-effective options for this kind of ground preparation. Follow that with a compacted layer of MOT Type 1 Recycled as your sub-base, creating the firm, load-bearing foundation that supports the finished surface. For block-paved driveways, washed recycled pipe bedding, tested to British Standard BS EN 13242, provides the ideal bedding layer. Recycled materials right through the build.

Raised Beds and Garden Borders

A layer of washed clean aggregates, available in 40-20mm and 75-40mm sizes, laid at the base of a raised bed, creates exactly the free-draining foundation that roots need. It’s also one of the smartest ways to use recycled aggregates for landscaping around borders and planting areas: improve drainage beneath topsoil, or use it as a decorative mulch layer that suppresses weeds while still letting rain through freely.

Soakaways and Garden Drainage Solutions

If part of your garden floods after heavy rain, a simple soakaway can solve the problem with minimal effort. Dig a pit to the size that suits your drainage requirements, line it with a geotextile membrane, and fill with washed clean  recycled aggregates in the 40-20mm or 75-40mm size.

The washing process removes fines and dust, leaving an open-graded material that allows water to pass through freely.
